The direct trigger that encouraged the practice of the literary movement was Standish James O'Grady's (1846-1928) two volumes of The History of Ireland (1878-80). The Ulster legends he collected here include stories about the cunning of King Conocher, the tragic love of Deirdre, and the military exploits of the hero Cuchulain, and provided ideal material for writers such as Yeats, Lady Gregory, Synge, GW Russell (pen name AE), and J. Stevens.
