An architectural term. Originally a French term, it is widely used in many languages. It refers to the front elevation of a building, but can also be used for the back or sides if they are important to the design, such as decorative or imposing aspects. In some cases, such as the classical Gothic Reims Cathedral, the facade directly expresses the interior space, while in other cases, such as the High Renaissance church of Sant'Andrea in Mantua by Alberti, the facade lacks any organic connection to the interior space and is designed as a facade for the sake of a facade. The treatment of facades is a major issue that concerns the very essence of architecture, as it is related to the issue of architectural design as an individual and the design of streets. It is well known as the venue for the coronation ceremonies of successive French kings.
