The main island of the Riau Islands, scattered south of Singapore Island in western Indonesia. Geographically, it is an extension of the Malay Peninsula. The hilly island has abundant bauxite deposits, most of which are exported to Japan. The capital is Tanjung Pinang. Since 1990, large-scale development has been carried out, including the construction of industrial parks. 1,075 km2 . Population: about 40,000 people.
