… In the Middle Ages, Katata was made up of two classes: local samurai called Tonobara-shu, and ordinary farmers, merchants, and industrialists called Matodo-shu. Many of the Matodo-shu eventually became followers of the Ikko sect through the teachings of Renyo. Honpuku-ji Temple became the center of these Katata followers.
