… In the Middle Ages, Katata was made up of two classes: local samurai called Tonobara-shu, and ordinary farmers, merchants, and industrialists called Matodo-shu. Many of the Matodo-shu eventually became followers of the Ikko sect through the teachings of Renyo. Honpuku-ji Temple became the center of these Katata followers. In response to the rise of the Katata followers, the feudal lord Enryaku-ji Temple attacked Katata in 1468 (Onin 2) (Katata Ozeme), and the Katata followers fled to Okinoshima Island, where they were not allowed to return until they paid a gift of money and gifts to Enryaku-ji Temple in 1470 (Bunmei 2). … *Some of the terminology that refers to the "Katata sect" is listed below.
