Hilti - Carl Hilty

Hilti - Carl Hilty

Swiss jurist and Christian ethical writer. His father was a well-known doctor. His mother was a devout, loving, and spiritually rich woman who is said to have had a profound influence on his spiritual development. He studied law and became a lawyer. He highly valued the social significance of this profession and worked hard to realize its ideals. In 1874, he became a professor at the University of Bern, and later its chancellor, during which time he also served as a military judiciary and was elected as a member of parliament. In 1909, he was appointed a judge at the International Court of Arbitration in The Hague, but died in the autumn of the same year. It was not his academic works that made Hilti's name known worldwide, but rather his series of religious and ethical works, such as Glück (3 volumes, 1891-1899) (The Theory of Happiness) and Für schlaflose Nächte (For Sleepless Nights, 1901, 1919). The spirit he expresses is shaped by Kantian philosophy, pietistic introspection, Dante, and especially by deep immersion in the Bible. He hated lifeless theology and dogma, and lived his life by appreciating and practicing the simple Gospel of Christ in the Bible. His firm faith has resonated widely and sustainedly, but it is also colored by classical humanism and Stoic asceticism. According to him, the goal of life is happiness, which consists of experiencing God's love, trusting in the ethical order of the world, working steadily, deepening one's introspection through unavoidable misfortune and suffering, and courage for justice. He supported the Salvation Army and was actively involved in social issues such as women's liberation. His works were introduced to Japan by Koeber, and have been widely read ever since.
