...James Merrill's long poem "The Changing Lights of Sandover" (1982) is the greatest recent achievement in poetry, and Harold Bloom's "Agon" (1982) is one of the achievements in literary criticism, but both are characterized by their strong influences of mystical thought. Arab critic Edward W. Said's "Orientalism" (1978) is also an excellent work of critique of civilization, elucidating how the West created the "Orient" that exists only in Western texts, and how it has maintained its attitude of domination based on that.
