Vannoccio Biringuccio (English spelling)

Italian metallurgist from 1480 to 1539. Born in Siena. His father is said to have been an architect. He traveled throughout Germany and Italy, acquiring knowledge of various technologies, especially metallurgy, and directed the manufacture and casting of weapons in Venice, Florence, Rome, and other places. Biringuccio's only book, Pirotechnia, is one of the most representative metallurgical books of the 16th century, along with Agricola's De re Metallica. It consists of 10 volumes, and covers a wide range of topics, starting with how to extract metals by melting ores, how to separate gold and silver, alloys, how to cast bronze (it describes in detail how to cast cannons, which had a great influence on military technology thereafter), coinage, type casting, plating, gunpowder and firearms.

イタリアの冶金技術者。シエナで生まれる。父親は建築家であったと伝えられる。ドイツ，イタリアの各地を旅行していろいろな技術，とりわけ冶金に関する知識を身につけ，ベネチア，フィレンツェ，ローマなどで，造兵･鋳造の指揮をとる。　ビリングッチョの唯一の著書といわれている《火工術Pirotechnia》は，アグリコラの《デ･レ･メタリカ》とならんで16世紀を代表する冶金術書である。全10巻から成り，鉱石を熔解して金属を取り出す方法から始まり，金と銀の分離の方法，合金，青銅の鋳造法(大砲の鋳造法について詳細に記述されており，その後の軍事技術に大きな影響を与えた)，造幣術，活字鋳造，めっき，火薬と火器など広範な内容を含んでいる。
