New Ohashi Bridge

Japanese:
New Ohashi Bridge
A bridge over the Sumida River. It connects Nihonbashi-Hamacho in Chuo Ward, Tokyo and Shin-Ohashi in Koto Ward. Construction began and was completed in 1693 (6th year of Genroku), but the bridge at that time was a wooden bridge located about 100m downstream from its current location. It is 108 ken (just over 194m) long, and is said to have cost more than 2,343 ryo to build. There were already two bridges over the Sumida River, Senju Ohashi and Ryogoku Bridge, so it was named Shin-Ohashi, and it improved the access between Nihonbashi and the areas of Honjo and Fukagawa, which had been developed since the early Edo period. The bridge is close to Matsuo Basho's residence, and he is known for his poems, "The first snow falls on the bridge that hangs over it" and "Thankful that I receive it, I step on the frost on the bridge."
