…By the 13th century, it became common to compose long renga of 50 or 100 lines, and the 100-verse format became the norm. The central figures in this movement were Emperor Gotoba and his associates, including Fujiwara no Teika and Ietaka. It is noteworthy that renga was generally composed as an accompaniment to waka poetry at the time, and that there were also cases where renga was divided into two groups: the Ushin group (Kakimoto group), which composed so-called Ushin renga based on the sentiments of waka poetry, and the Mushin group (Kurimoto group), which composed so-called Mushin renga, which focused on humor and humour, and competed with each other. From this time on, collaborative writing by multiple authors was formalized, various rules for composing were accumulated, and efforts were made to facilitate the management of renga troupes, which prompted the emergence of the Shikimoku (Renga Shikimoku). …
