[Died] October 7, 2013. Paris. French theater director and film director. He began his theater career in high school, and at the age of 19, he directed Victor Hugo's L'Intervention, which gained popularity, and he dropped out of the Sorbonne to concentrate on theater. He continued his provocative directing career, co-directing the National Popular Theatre from 1971 to 1977 and the Nanterre-Amandiers Theatre from 1982 to 1990. When he directed Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festival (→Bayreuth Festival Theater) in 1976, he shocked the audience with his original Marxist interpretation (→Marxism), changing the setting from the German mythological era to the European Industrial Revolution. However, the performance was a success, and paved the way for directors to add bold interpretations to their subsequent opera productions. As a film director, his work includes La Reine Margot (1994, Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival) and Intimacy (2001).

フランスの演出家，映画監督。高校時代から演劇活動を開始，19歳のときビクトル・ユゴー作『介入』L'Interventionを演出して人気を博し，ソルボンヌ大学を退学して演劇に専念する。1971～77年国立民衆劇場，1982～90年ナンテール・アマンディエ劇場の共同監督を務め，挑発的な演出活動を続けた。1976年バイロイト音楽祭（→バイロイト祝祭劇場）でリヒアルト・ワーグナーの『ニーベルンゲンの指輪』を演出した際，背景をドイツの神話的時代からヨーロッパの産業革命時代に置き換え，独創的なマルクス主義的解釈（→マルクス主義）を行なって観客に衝撃を与えた。しかし公演は成功裏に終わり，その後のオペラ演出に演出家が大胆な解釈を加える道を開いた。映画監督としては，『王妃マルゴ』La Reine Margot（1994，カンヌ国際映画祭審査員賞），『インティマシー／親密』Intimacy（2001）などを手がけた。
