A news agency established in 1989 as a joint venture between Moscow Broadcasting, Italy and France. It later became a completely independent news agency, distributing political and economic information to Moscow and overseas news agencies. It has been highly praised both at home and abroad for its accurate information, as exemplified by its coverage of the August 1991 coup, and its stance of complete independence from state power.
