Insight into illness

Japanese: 病識 - びょうしき

The awareness that one is ill is called awareness of illness. Schizophrenia patients say that they are not ill, that their delusions are real, that they really hear auditory hallucinations, etc., and are therefore said to have no awareness of their illness.
Because patients lack awareness of their illness, they may be reluctant to visit the doctor or may discontinue treatment midway. In the case of schizophrenia, it is difficult to make them fully aware of their illness, but by repeatedly explaining about medication and the illness, we try to help them gradually understand the need for treatment.

自分が病気であるという自覚を病識といいます。統合失調症の患者さんは、自分は病気ではない、妄想（もうそう）も本当のことである、幻聴（げんちょう）も本当に聞こえてくる、などといいますから、「病識がない」とされています。
　病識がないために、受診をいやがったり、途中で治療を中断してしまうことがあります。統合失調症の場合、完全な病識をもたせることはむずかしいのですが、薬の服用や病気についての説明をくり返し行なうことで、少しずつ治療が必要なことをわかってもらうようにしています。
