Colonnade - colonnade (English spelling)

A colonnade is a space between columns connected by horizontal beams at the top. It may be constructed as an independent building or may form part of a building. It can be found in ancient Greek temples and Roman arenas, but was also widely used in Baroque and Classical architecture. The largest and most typical example is that of St. Peter's Square in Rome, designed by Bernini. This is an ingenious design befitting the atrium of the Catholic headquarters, and it successfully highlights the facade of the cathedral through the use of perspective effects.

円柱間の上部を水平の梁(はり)で連結した柱廊。独立した建築として構築される場合と、建築の一部をなす場合がある。古くはギリシアの神殿やローマの闘技場などに現れるが、バロックや古典主義の建築にも多く取り入れられた。もっとも規模の大きい典型的な事例は、ベルニーニの設計によるローマのサン・ピエトロ広場のそれであるが、これはカトリックの総本山の前庭部（アトリウム）にふさわしい巧妙なデザインであり、透視図法的な効果によって大聖堂の正面を際だてることに成功している。
