An ancient ethnic group in Myanmar who spoke a language belonging to the Tibeto-Burman language family. They built and lived in a small fortress state centered around Prohm in the Irrawaddy River basin. Several ruins of fortresses remain today. All ruins were surrounded by long brick walls and had moats on the outside. Several commonalities can be seen from the artifacts excavated from the ruins. One of these was the urn burial system, in which the Pyu people would cremate their dead and then bury them in stone jars or unglazed pots. This custom is unique to the Pyu people and has not been passed down to the Burmese people. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
