One Hundred Tales - One Hundred Tales
[1] [noun] A game in which several people gather at night and take turns telling ghost stories. One hundred candles or lanterns with one hundred wicks are lit, and one is extinguished after each story is finished. It is said that when the last wick is extinguished, a ghost will appear. One hundred stories. [Season: Summer] *Hyakumonogatari (1659), a storybook, "Hyakumonogatari" (100 stories), preface: "No matter what the story, if you tell a hundred stories, a ghost will always appear." [2] Kabuki Shosakuto. Tokiwazu, Kiyomoto, Nagauta. One act. Lyrics by Kawatake Shinshichi III. Music by Kiyomoto Umekichi II, Kishizawa Shikisa VI, and Kineya Rokuzaemon XIII. Original title: Yaminoume Hyakumonogatari . First performed at the Tokyo Kabukiza in 1900 ( Meiji 33). The dance features five different monsters, including the umbrella-legged one, the snow maiden, and a skeleton. The last one, " Osakabe, " is one of the ten new and old plays.

[1] 〘名〙 夜、数人が集まって交代で怪談を語る遊び。一〇〇本の蝋燭、または行灯に一〇〇本の灯心を入れてともし、一つの話が終わるごとに一本ずつ消していき、最後の一本を消したときに妖怪が現われるとされたもの。百咄。《季・夏》※咄本・百物語(1659)序「何にても百物語をすれば、かならずこはき物あらはれ出るとうけ給はりし」[2] 歌舞伎所作事。常磐津・清元・長唄。一幕。三世河竹新七作詞。二世清元梅吉・六世岸沢式佐・一三世杵屋六左衛門などの作曲。本名題「闇梅(やみのうめ)百物語」。明治三三年(一九〇〇)東京歌舞伎座初演。傘の一本足・雪女郎・骸骨などの化け物の五変化舞踊。最後の「小坂部(おさかべ)」は新古演劇十種の一つ。
