[1] 〘名〙 真冬にとった氷を夏まで貯えておく室(むろ)。特に、氷池(ひいけ)に張った氷を切り出して貯蔵しておく室。山陰に穴を掘り、茅などでその上をおおって氷を保存した。ここで貯えられた氷は、天皇には四月一日から九月末日、中宮・東宮などには五月から八月、臣下には五月五日から八月末日までの間供するために、毎日京に送られた。《季・夏》※令義解(718)職員「主水司 正一人。〈掌樽水。饘粥。及氷室事〉」※千載(1187)夏・二〇八「春秋も後のかたみはなきものをひむろぞ冬のなごりなりける〈覚性法親王〉」[2] 謡曲。脇能物。各流。宮増(みやます)作といわれる。朝臣が丹波国氷室山に立ち寄ると、氷室守(もり)の老人が現われて、毎年供御(くご)にささげる氷の溶けないいわれや、この氷室のおこりなどを語り、そのまま氷室の中に姿を消す。やがて天女が現われて舞を舞い、ついで氷室明神が室の中から本体を現わして氷を守護して都へ運ばせる様子を物語る。「日本書紀」による。
