Tsuchida Bakusen

Japanese: 土田麦僊 - つちだばくせん
Tsuchida Bakusen

Japanese painter. Born in Sado, Niigata Prefecture. His real name was Kinji. In 1903 (Meiji 36), he moved to Kyoto and became a pupil of Suzuki Shonen. The following year, he studied under Takeuchi Seihō and lived in the Takeuchi household. In 1909, he entered the separate department of Kyoto Municipal Painting College, which had opened that same year. Other students in the department included Ono Chikukyo and Nonagase Banka, while Murakami Kagaku and Sakakibara Shiho were in the main department. While a student, he helped found Chat Noir and Le Masque, and graduated from the school in 1911. In 1908, he entered "Punishment" at the 2nd Bunten Exhibition, where he won third prize, and by the 11th Exhibition, he exhibited works such as "Hair" (1911), "Island Woman" (1912), and "Oharame" (1915). In 1918 (Taisho 7), he formed the Kokuga Creation Association with Kagaku, Chikukyo, and Shiho, and exhibited "Bath Girl" at the first exhibition. After traveling to Europe from 1921 to 1923, he opened a new frontier in Japanese painting by exhibiting works such as "Maiko and Forest Fountain" (1924), "Oharame" (1927), and "Morning Glories" (1928), until the Association was dissolved in 1928 (Showa 3). After the Association was dissolved, he returned to the Teiten Exhibition, and became a judge in 1930, and a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in 1934. He died in Kyoto. Sannankai, an art school that he opened in 1923, produced such artists as Toyoshiro Fukuda, Eigetsu Kitazawa, and Hitoshi Komatsu. The philosopher Kyoson Tsuchida was his younger brother.
