...Even if the external conditions such as water and temperature are sufficient, the seeds may not germinate for a certain period of time and may go into spontaneous dormancy. This is because the seeds do not germinate until the chemical changes necessary for germination are complete inside the seeds, and is called after-ripening of the seeds. A dormant bud is a lateral bud that remains dormant and inactive on the branch while the terminal bud is actively growing, and generally begins to grow immediately if the terminal bud is removed.

...(2) will germinate if the seed coat is partially damaged by a file or if the seed is soaked in concentrated sulfuric acid for a short time, and (3) will germinate if the seed coat is removed. The properties of the seed coat that hinder germination of (2) and (3) are lost as the seed ripens.
