A general term for mammals in the family Vespertilionidae (chiroptera), or one of the species. The family Vespertilionidae consists of 44 genera and 353 species, accounting for one-third of the total number of species in the order Chiroptera. They are distributed widely from the subarctic to temperate and tropical regions of the world, excluding the Antarctic and Arctic, and their habitats are extremely diverse. The oldest fossils are known from the Eocene of Europe. They have no claws on the second toe, no nose lobes, and well-developed tragus and interfemoral membranes. Those found in Japan are classified into three subfamilies: the subfamily Nasophytinae, which consists of the genus Nasophytidae, which have tubular noses; the subfamily Pterotinae, which includes the genus Neophytidae, which have long-fingered bats with long third digits; and the subfamily Vespertinata, which includes the genera Polytminae, Leptotminae, Myotis, Oriental bat, Pipistrellus, Vespertinata, and Porphyrobat.
