Hwamei (Hwamei) - Hwamei (Hwamei)

Japanese: ガビチョウ(画眉鳥) - ガビチョウ(英語表記)hwamei
Hwamei (Hwamei) - Hwamei (Hwamei)
A passerine bird of the flycatcher family. Total length about 25 cm. At first glance, it resembles a thrush, with an olive-reddish-brown back and chest, and black vertical stripes on the top of the head, the back of the neck, and the throat. The belly is gray. It is characterized by prominent white bands above and below the eyes, especially on the eyebrows, from which the name comes. It is found in central and southern China, Taiwan, Hainan Island, and the Indochina Peninsula, and is particularly common in Fujian and Guangdong provinces, where it is commonly kept as a caged bird. It has occasionally been imported to Japan as a pet since the Edo period, and, influenced by Chinese painting, it also appears in flower and bird paintings.
