The order in which the strokes of a character are written. This mainly applies to kanji and kana. Kanji characters have many complex strokes, so the stroke order is an issue, but they were originally written to be easily tidy with a brush, and some characters, such as "必", "飛", and "馬", are widely recognized to have more than two stroke orders. There are two major principles: "from top to bottom" and "from left to right", but there are exceptions. The origin of the character is generally irrelevant, but the stroke order for "na" in "右" and "有" is written with "丿" first because it was originally a variation of "又". Regular script and semi-cursive script often have the same stroke order, but cursive scripts such as "書" and "年" may differ. Katakana characters are derived from kanji, so the stroke order is the same as kanji, but some have changed in later generations, such as "メ" (the last two strokes of "女") and "ヨ" (the last stroke of "与"). Hard pens (fountain pens, pencils, ballpoint pens, etc.) can be used more freely than calligraphy brushes, so the stroke order is often disrupted, but writing "o-zato/ko-zato" starting with "|" or "wo" starting with "fu" should be corrected.
