Vickers [company] - Vickers
The core company of the UK's largest heavy industry group. It began as a steelworks started by E. Vickers in 1828, and became Vickers Sons & Co. Ltd. in 1867. In 1897, it absorbed arms manufacturer Maxim. Its name was changed to Vickers Sons & Maxim Ltd., but in 1911 it was changed back to Vickers Ltd. The company developed through shipbuilding and arms manufacturing, and in 1928 it established Vickers-Armstrong in collaboration with Armstrong, of which it acquired all shares in 1939. After World War II, the steel division was nationalized in the 1950s and 1960s, and the shipbuilding and aircraft divisions were nationalized in 1977. In 1980, it acquired the automobile division of Rolls-Royce, but sold it to Volkswagen. It has had its current name since 1981. Currently, its main products are aircraft and marine engines, defense equipment, and turbines. Headquarters in London.
