Motomaro Senke

Japanese: 千家元麿 - せんげもとまろ
Motomaro Senke

Poet. Born in Tokyo. His father, Takatomi, was the chief priest of Izumo Taisha Shrine and later the governor of Tokyo Prefecture. His mother was his father's concubine, Ogawa Yutaka, the daughter of a restaurant owner in Ryogoku. During middle school, he moved from school to school several times, submitting poems, tanka, and haiku under pen names such as Boro and Ginsenpo. He published the literary coterie magazine Terra Kotta with Fukushi Kojiro and Sato Sonosuke, praised Mushanokoji Saneatsu's Seken Nairu (I Am Unfamiliar with the World), and interacted with members of the Shirakaba coterie. In 1913 (Taisho 2), he married Akazawa Chiyoko despite his father's objections. He promoted Shirakaba's satellite magazine Ego. In 1918, he published his first collection of poems, Jibun wa Mita (I Saw It) (with binding by Kishida Ryusei). He combined an innocent heart, common manliness and optimism, and even in his poverty he never lost his admiration for humanity and nature, leading a thorough life as the "poet of paradise." His poetry collections include "Rainbow" (1919), "Old House" (1929), "Hail" (1931), and "Blue Sea Poetry Collection" (1936).
