Beach rock

Japanese: ビーチロック（英語表記）beach rock

A rock formed by the intertidal sand and gravel deposits solidifying into plates with calcium carbonate and other cementing materials. It is also called beach gravel. Its main distribution area is concentrated in tropical and subtropical coasts where coral reefs are distributed, but it also spreads to the surrounding seas, including the Mediterranean coast and high latitudes of 40° to 50° north, and the cementing material can also be iron-based. It presents a microcuspate-like topography that runs parallel to the beach and has a gentle slope of several degrees toward the seaward side, and is an essential microtopography that makes up the coastal topography of coral reef areas.

潮間帯付近の砂礫堆積物が，炭酸カルシウムをはじめとする膠結物質により板状に固結した岩石。汀砂(レキ)岩ともいう。おもな分布域はサンゴ礁の分布する熱帯･亜熱帯の海浜に大部分が集中するが，さらにその周辺海域である，地中海沿岸や北緯40゜～50゜の高緯度まで広がり，膠結物質も鉄分の場合が認められる。海浜に平行し，海側へ数度のゆるい勾配でミクロケスタ状の地形を呈し，サンゴ礁地域の海岸地形を構成する一つの微地形として欠かせない。
