...Autumn-sown cultivation accounts for more than 90% of onion cultivation. Winter-harvesting cultivation is a technique developed in the 1960s, also known as onion set cultivation, in which onions are sown in the spring to produce small bulbs, which are then stored, then planted in the fall and harvested in winter or early spring. Recently, cultivation methods have also come into use to make use of small bulbs of onions, known as baby onions or pearl onions.
