A deviated nasal septum is a phenomenon unique to humans. Most newborns have a straight nasal septum, except in cases of trauma at birth. However, as the baby grows, the nasal septum becomes curved, and more than 90% of adults have a curved nasal septum, although to varying degrees. When this occurs, symptoms such as a stuffy nose and a heavy feeling in the head are complained of, and this is called a deviated nasal septum. It is thought that the cause of the curvature is that, despite vigorous growth of the nasal septum cartilage, when walking upright, the weight of the skull is placed on this area, inhibiting vertical expansion.

鼻中隔が彎(湾)曲しているのはヒト特有の現象で，出生時に外傷をうけた場合以外は新生児ではほとんどが鼻中隔はまっすぐであるが，成長につれて彎曲が起こり，成人では90％以上の人に程度の差はあれ鼻中隔に彎曲がみられる。このうち，鼻づまりや頭が重い感じなどの症状を訴える場合を鼻中隔彎曲症と呼ぶ。彎曲の原因は，鼻中隔軟骨の発育が旺盛であるにもかかわらず，直立歩行によって頭蓋の重みがちょうどこの部位にかかり，上下方向の伸びが阻害されるためと考えられている。
