Orochi - Orochi

...Following the big success of this work, Makino Film produced a series of period dramas written by Susukita Rokkuhei, such as "The Bloody Handprint" and "The Slain One" directed by Numata Koryoku, and "The Reverse Current" and "The Tale of the Edo Thief: Kageboshi" directed by Futagawa Buntaro. Bando Tsumasaburo, who starred in these films, became an instant star and was even called the "King of Swordplay." Bando Tsumasaburo then became independent and teamed up with Susukita and Futagawa to create "Orochi" (1925), an explosive brawl scene that depicted the resistance and rebellious spirit of ronin samurai. These works by Susukita Rokkuhei clearly showed the influence of American serials in terms of the development of the screen and the sense of speed in the movements of the characters, and "The Fierce Hawk" (1924), starring Takagi Shinpei and Susukita and starring Futagawa, was an adaptation of "The Great Hero Zorro" starring Douglas Fairbanks.

…この作品の大ヒットに続いて，マキノ映画では，沼田紅緑監督《鮮血の手型》《討たるゝ者》や二川文太郎監督《逆流》《江戸怪盗伝･影法師》等々，寿々喜多呂九平脚本の時代劇が連作され，これらに主演した阪東妻三郎は一躍スターになって，〈剣戟（けんげき）王〉とまでいわれた。そして，阪東妻三郎は独立し，寿々喜多･二川コンビと組んで，浪人の抵抗と反逆の心をすさまじい乱闘シーンで爆発させた《雄呂血（おろち）》(1925)をつくった。　これら寿々喜多呂九平作品には，画面展開と人物の動きの快走感の点で，明らかにアメリカ連続活劇の影響が見られ，寿々喜多･二川コンビの高木新平主演《快傑鷹》(1924)は，ダグラス･フェアバンクス主演《奇傑ゾロ》の翻案であった。…
