Awareness - Zonkaku

A scholarly monk in the Northern and Southern Courts period. The eldest son of Hongan-ji Kakunyo. His mother was the daughter of the monk Kyoko. His given name was Kogen. He became a monk at Kofuku-ji, received precepts at Todai-ji, studied under Sonshoin Genchi at Enryaku-ji, and studied at Juraku-in and Shomon-in. After 1310 (Enkei 3), he assisted his father Kakunyo. He produced many discussion books, including the Shojin Honkaishu, and provided doctrinal guidance for the missionary activities of the Shinran sect. In 1353 (Bunwa 2), he founded Jorakudai in Imakoji, northern Otani, and completed the 10-volume Rokuyosho, the first commentary on Shinran's Kyogyoshinsho. He was disowned by his father twice, in 1322 (Gankyo 2) and 1342 (Koei 1), due to doctrinal differences and family problems, and therefore did not succeed the position of Honganji Rusushiki, but he contributed to establishing the doctrinal foundation of the Honganji sect. He also enrolled his son Kogon (Jikan) in Kinshokuji Temple in Omi, laying the foundation for the rise of the Shinshu Kibe school. His book "The Life and Times of Shonin Zonkaku" (1982, Dohosha Publishing) is a first-class historical source on the history of the Honganji Temple during his time.

南北朝時代の学僧。本願寺覚如(かくにょ)の長子。母は僧教弘(きょうこう)の女(むすめ)。諱(いみな)は光玄(こうげん)。興福寺で出家し、東大寺で受戒(じゅかい)、延暦(えんりゃく)寺で尊勝院玄智(そんしょういんげんち)に師事、十楽(じゅうらく)院・証聞(しょうもん)院で修学、1310年（延慶3）以後、父覚如を補佐した。『諸神本懐集(しょじんほんがいしゅう)』以下の数多くの談義本(だんぎぼん)を製作して親鸞(しんらん)門流の布教活動を教義面から指導した。1353年（文和2）大谷(おおたに)の北辺今小路(いまこうじ)に常楽台(じょうらくだい)を創建し、親鸞の『教行信証(きょうぎょうしんしょう)』の初めての注釈書『六要鈔(ろくようしょう)』10巻を完成させた。教学上の相違や家庭問題で父から1322年（元享2）、1342年（康永元）の2度にわたり義絶されたこともあり、本願寺留守職(るすしき)を継職することはなかったが、本願寺教団の教学基礎の確立に寄与した。また、子の綱厳(こうごん)（慈観(じかん)）を近江(おうみ)の錦織(きんしょく)寺に入れ、真宗木辺(きべ)派興隆の基礎を築いた。著書の『存覚上人一期記・存覚上人袖日記』（1982年・同朋舎出版）は同時代本願寺史の一級史料である。
