A genus of the Nyctaginaceae family, there are about 50 species, mainly in the tropics. Some species have edible young shoots, while others are grown for their leaves. Its Japanese name is Ookusaboku. The commonly cultivated species is P. brunoniana Endl., and many variegated varieties have been produced. The leaves are oblong and glossy, with irregular white and yellowish-white spots that form a marble-like pattern. The leaves grow in small clusters at the top of the trunk.
