Bizen Canal

An agricultural canal in northern Musashi Province that was excavated by the head official Ina Tadatsugu in 1604. It was also called Bizenbori. At that time, the water from the Karasu River was taken from the village of Nite (present-day Honjo City, Saitama Prefecture), diverted into the Koyama River at Takise Village (present-day Honjo City), diverted into Yajima Village (present-day Fukaya City, Saitama Prefecture), merged with the Fuku River at Yatogo Village (present-day Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture), and diverted again at Hinata Weir (present-day Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture). In 1659, the villages along the canal were organized into three associations, and each association was responsible for repairing the weir. In 1793, the intake was closed, causing water shortages and frequent disputes over water. In 1828, the Jinteguchi was opened and improved with a double irrigation system, and a new 747-ken ditch was excavated between the Karasu River and Sennanbori.

1604年代官頭伊奈忠次により開削された武蔵国北部の農業用水。備前堀ともよばれた。当時の用水は，烏(からす)川の水を仁手(にって)村（現埼玉県本庄市）地先で取水，滝瀬(たきせ)村（現本庄市）で小山(こやま)川に落とし，矢島(やじま)村（現同県深谷市）で分水した後，弥藤五(やとうご)村（現同県熊谷市）で福(ふく)川に合流，日向(ひなた)堰（現同上）で再び分水した。1659年用水沿いの諸村を３組合に編成し，各堰の改修を分担。1793年取水口が閉鎖されたため，水不足が生じ水論が続出。1828年仁手口を開き二重の圦樋(いりひ)に改良，烏川と仙南(せんなん)堀との間に新たに747間の溝を開削した。
