Born: March 23, 1821, Lamenie, Kostrom
[Died] February 2, 1881. Moscow Russian novelist. Born into a poor noble family, he continued to write while working at a government office. In Tyufyak (1850), he portrayed the life of local society before the emancipation of the serfs, especially the moral decadence of the nobility. Many of his works were used by revolutionary critics of the time as political propaganda against serfdom, but he himself was not sympathetic to such movements, and even satirized them in Vzbalamuchennoe more (63). His other works include Tysyacha dush (58) and Man of the Forties (69).
