An annual vine of the Cannabaceae family that grows in wastelands such as roadsides and riverbanks (illustration). It is widely distributed from the warm temperate zone to the subtropics of East Asia. The vine-like stems can reach several meters in length. The stems and petioles have small, inverted thorns that help them cling to other plants. The leaves are palmately divided into 5 to 7 lobes, 5 to 15 cm long, and have rough hairs on both sides. The plant is dioecious, with differentiated sex chromosomes. It flowers from August to September. The female flowers are enclosed in large bracts and are pine cone-shaped. The male flowers are in a panicle with five tepals. The fruit is lenticular, about 5 mm in diameter, has markings similar to those on a quail's egg, is yellowish brown, and has fine hairs on the upper part.
