Bizerte (English spelling)

Bizerte (English spelling)

A port city in the northern tip of Tunisia, North Africa. It is located 65 km north of the capital, Tunis. It has a population of 98,900 (1994). Facing the Strait of Sicily, it is located at the center of the Mediterranean sea route, and since ancient times it has been a shipping port for agricultural products, a fishing port, and a pirate and naval base. During the French colonial period, a modern wharf was built on the northern bank of the waterway at the outlet of Lake Bizerte into the Mediterranean Sea, and a European-style city was also built. A French naval base was also established here, but it was returned in 1963. After independence, industrialization was promoted, and there are factories for cement, oil refining, shipbuilding, etc., and a steelworks in Menzel Bourguiba at the back of the lake. It is the northernmost point of the African continent, and has a beautiful coastline, making it a tourist destination.
