The word is thought to be a combination of "pendant" (sometimes used synonymously with "pennant") and "pennon." A pendant is a flag hoisted on the rafters or mast of a ship, and the size of the flag, the composition of the signal letters, and the signaling method for merchant ships are specified in the International Code of Signals.
