〘 noun 〙① Dyeing business. A family whose occupation is indigo dyeing. Also, the person. ※Tamonin Diary - Tensho 4th year (1576) December 1st "Konnosomechin, aoya nite ichimon me ni mon tsutsu no tsu" ② The title of indigo dyeing business in the Kyoto area during the Middle Ages and Early Modern Periods. They were considered outcasts, and belonged to the Kyoto Magistrate's Office, where they carried out sentences and cleaned prison cells. ※Nobunaga Koki (1598) 12 "Aoya, several hundred people from the riverbank"
