〘 noun 〙① Dyeing business. A family whose occupation is indigo dyeing. Also, the person. ※Tamonin Diary - Tensho 4th year (1576) December 1st "Konnosomechin, aoya nite ichimon me ni mon tsutsu no tsu" ② The title of indigo dyeing business in the Kyoto area during the Middle Ages and Early Modern Periods. They were considered outcasts, and belonged to the Kyoto Magistrate's Office, where they carried out sentences and cleaned prison cells. ※Nobunaga Koki (1598) 12 "Aoya, several hundred people from the riverbank"

〘名〙① 染色業者。藍染めを職業とする家。また、その人。※多聞院日記‐天正四年（1576）一二月一日「こんのそめちん、あをやにて一文目二文つつの通にて」② 中、近世、京都周辺における藍染め業者の称。賤民視され、京都町奉行所に所属して刑の執行、牢屋の掃除などを行なった。※信長公記（1598）一二「青屋、河原の者数百人」
