A flag hoisted on ships belonging to the navy. In countries that have army and navy flags, the naval flag is used, while in countries that have not, the national flag is used. When hoisted, the naval ensign represents the sovereignty and honor of the country and the privileges of the warship, and indicates that the ship is outside the territory of a foreign country. In Japan, the Rising Sun Flag, featuring 16 rising rays, was established in October 1890 (Meiji 23). During battle, it is hoisted on the mast and became a battle flag. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force also uses a flag with the same design as its naval ensign.
