The languages ​​spoken in the Visayan Islands of the Philippines (all Austronesian languages) are often collectively referred to as Visayan, but in fact they include a great many different languages. They can be broadly classified into the following subcategories (all speaker populations are as of 1975): (1) Western Visayan languages: Aklanon (approximately 300,000) and Kinaray‐a (approximately 350,000) on the island of Panay. (2) Central Visayan languages: Hiligaynon (approximately 3 million) on the island of Panay and Waray (also known as Waray‐waray) on the islands of Samar and Leyte.
