A general term for the islands scattered between the two islands of Luzon and Mindanao in the Philippine archipelago. Also known as Bisaya. Total area is about 60,000 km2 . The main islands are Masbate, Panay, Negros, Samar, Cebu, Leyte, and Bohol. Historically, this was the earliest developed region in the Philippines, and has a large population.
