In terms of film history, films made from the imperial era through the rule of Kerensky's Provisional Government are "Russian films," while films made after the October Revolution are "Soviet films." There is a theory that in 1894, a film made using a machine invented by two physics professors at Moscow University was shown at an academic conference, but Russia's connection with film began in May 1896, when a cameraman sent by the French company Louis Lumiere filmed the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II in Moscow. In the same month, Russia's first cinema was built in St. Petersburg, and British, American, and French film companies set up branches there and dominated the film market, with film production not beginning until 1907.
