An old town in Yuri County, southern Akita Prefecture. The central settlement, Oikata, was an important transportation hub on the Honjo Kaido road in the early modern period. The town produces rice, livestock, and tobacco, as well as flowers and vegetables. In March 2005, Honjo City merged with the towns of Yajima, Iwaki, Yuri, Nishime, Chokai, and Ouchi in Yuri County to form Yurihonjo City. Area: 150.17 km2 . Population: 4,886 (2003). 秋田県南部,由利郡の旧町。中心集落の老方(おいかた)は近世,本荘街道の交通要地。米作,畜産,タバコ栽培を営み,花卉(かき),野菜も産する。2005年3月本荘市,由利郡矢島町,岩城町,由利町,西目町,鳥海町,大内町と合併し市制,由利本荘市となる。150.17km2。4886人(2003)。
