An old town in Yuri County, southern Akita Prefecture. The central settlement, Oikata, was an important transportation hub on the Honjo Kaido road in the early modern period. The town produces rice, livestock, and tobacco, as well as flowers and vegetables. In March 2005, Honjo City merged with the towns of Yajima, Iwaki, Yuri, Nishime, Chokai, and Ouchi in Yuri County to form Yurihonjo City. Area: 150.17 km2 . Population: 4,886 (2003).
