〘noun〙 (octave) (from the Latin for eight) The eighth note of a diatonic scale consisting of seven notes. It also refers to the interval between an eighth note above (twice the frequency) and an eighth note below (half the frequency). It is also used figuratively to mean the tone of something. An eighth interval. ※Music Theory Beginners (1888)〈translated by Uchida Yaichi〉 "To measure the interval of a scale, start from the first note, <omitted> and the final note is the eighth note from the first note, so it is called an eighth note (octave) ." ※Constellations (1922)〈Arishima Takeo〉 "When Otake was gone, the tone of the room became, so to speak, one octave lower."
