Italian astronomer. After graduating from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Turin in 1854, he taught mathematics at the same university while studying modern linguistics and astronomy. In 1857, he studied under Encke at the Berlin Observatory, and then under F. Struve at the Pulkovo Observatory. After returning to Italy in 1860, he took up a position at the Brera Observatory in Milan. He became the director of the observatory in 1862. He retired from his position in 1900 and spent the rest of his life there. In 1861, he discovered the asteroid Hesperia. He calculated the periodic orbit of the Perseid meteor shower in August 1866, and confirmed that it matched that of the third comet that appeared in 1862, determining that the comet was the parent of the meteor shower. He also revealed that the Leonid meteor shower was an alter ego of the first comet that appeared in 1866. In 1872, he received the Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society for this discovery. In 1877, he also discovered a network of lines on the surface of Mars, which he called canals and raised a question about.
