A city in western Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. It is located on the Musashino Plateau on the north bank of the Tama River, and is served by the Ome Line, Hachiko Line, and Itsukaichi Line. It used to be a farming village, mainly producing field crops and silkworms. After World War II, it became a base town, located near the US Yokota Air Base. In 1987, it was designated an urban development area under the Capital Region Development Plan, and residential development progressed rapidly. 東京都西部の市。1970年市制。多摩川北岸の武蔵野台地にあり,青梅(おうめ)線,八高線,五日市線が通じる。かつては畑作と養蚕を主とする農村であった。第2次世界大戦後は米軍横田基地をひかえ,基地の町に変貌,1987年首都圏整備計画によって市街地開発区域に指定され,住宅地化が急速に進んだ。10.16km2。5万9796人(2010)。
