A city in the northeastern part of Osaka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. Its population was 53,763 (1995). The city area is made up of the Ikoma Mountains in the east and alluvial lowlands in the west. It has a long history, and Jomon period relics have been discovered at the Okayama ruins at the foot of the mountains. In the past, settlements were distributed along the Higashi-Takano Highway and the Kiyotaki Highway, which connected Yamato and Kawachi from east to west. Rice was the main agricultural crop from the foot of the mountains to the alluvial lowlands, and the lowlands were known as a water town. Flour milling was carried out on the foothills using waterwheels. In 1895, the Naniwa Railway Company began operating a railway line (currently the JR Katamachi Line) connecting Katamachi and Shijonawate in Osaka City, and after World War II, small factories manufacturing wire mesh, ball bearings, bolts, nuts, etc. moved along the line.
