This refers to the measures sellers take to stimulate and stimulate demand from buyers as part of sales activities. It is often called sales promotion in English or shortened to sales promotion. The important thing is that the basic principle is not "selling hard" or high-pressure sales, but to stand in the buyer's position and work to interest them, increase their desire, and make them want to buy. This is called customer-oriented or consumer-oriented. Sales promotion methods include (1) open shared methods (advertising and publicity by the mass media = corporate information through reports), (2) closed exclusive methods (catalogs, etc.), (3) human methods (demonstrations, etc.), (4) material methods (provision of samples, etc.), (5) financial methods (rebates, etc.), and (6) organization (friends' associations, etc.). In terms of activities for specific targets, there are two major areas: external sales promotion and internal sales promotion. The former consists of activities for wholesalers (salesperson training, sales contests, advice on wholesale advertising, provision of information and materials, etc.), activities for retailers (dealer meetings, guidance on advertising, store design and product display, salesperson training, provision of catalogues, prizes and samples, etc.), and activities for final consumers (direct mail, provision of samples, catalogues and magazines, consultation services, consumer education, holding exhibitions, briefing sessions and lectures, demonstrations, organizing friends' associations, etc.). Internal sales promotion includes activities for sales departments (salesperson training, sales contests, preparation of sales materials, etc.), activities for advertising departments (advertising budgets, etc.), and activities for other related departments.

Effective sales promotion involves a variety of measures that work together organically. This state is called the sales promotion mix. Most sales promotion takes place before the buyer makes a purchase, but we must not forget the effect of sales promotion after the purchase. 販売活動の一環として、売り手が買い手に対して行う需要の喚起と刺激のための諸策をいう。英語のままセールス・プロモーションといったり、省略して販促ということも少なくない。重要なことは、その基本理念が「売りつける販売」ないし高圧的販売にあるのではなく、買い手の立場にたち、彼らが関心を抱き、欲求を高め、購買したくなるように働きかけることである。これを顧客志向もしくは消費者志向という。販売促進の手段としては、〔1〕開放的共用手段(マスコミによる広告やパブリシティ=報道による企業情報)、〔2〕閉鎖的専用手段(カタログなど)、〔3〕人的手段(実演など)、〔4〕物的手段(サンプル提供など)、〔5〕金銭的手段(リベートなど)、〔6〕組織化(友の会など)がある。また対象別の活動としては、対外的販売促進と対内的販売促進の二大分野がある。前者は、対卸売商活動(販売員訓練、販売コンテスト、卸売広告助言、情報・資料の提供など)、対小売商活動(販売店会議、広告・店舗設計・商品陳列の指導、店員教育、カタログ・景品・試供品の提供など)、対最終消費者活動(ダイレクト・メール、見本・カタログ・機関誌の提供、相談サービス、消費者教育、展示会・説明会・講演会の開催、実演、友の会の組織化など)からなっている。対内的販売促進には、対販売部門活動(販売員教育、販売コンテスト、販売資材の準備など)、対広告部門活動(広告予算など)、その他関連部門活動がある。

 有効な販売促進は、各種の方策が有機的に連動することである。このような状態をセールス・プロモーション・ミックスという。また、販売促進のほとんどは買い手の購買に先行して行われるが、購買後の販売促進効果を忘れてはならない。それはアフター・サービスであり、適切なアフター・サービスは顧客満足customer satisfaction(CS)を生み出して、次の購買の有力な原動力になる。
