…It was written between the winter of 1688 (Genroku 1) and the spring of the following year (although there are other theories). On August 11, 1688, accompanied by Etsujin and Kakei servants, he traveled along the Kiso Road, admired the moon at the time of the shunning of the dead, visited Zenkoji the next day, and returned to Edo at the end of the month from Nagano via Usui Pass. The work is structured with the text in the first half and hokku in the second half. The opening line reads, "In Sarashina Village, I went to view the moon on Mount Shunning, the relentless autumn wind blowing through my heart," indicating that this work is a record of the moon-viewing at the time of the shunning of the dead. …
