Takeo Iwahashi

Japanese: 岩橋武夫 - いわはしたけお

Social worker. Born in Osaka Prefecture. He became blind while studying at Waseda University and dropped out. He went on to study religious philosophy and pure philosophy at Kwansei Gakuin University and the University of Edinburgh. In 1931, he became the first president of the Osaka Association for the Blind. Inspired by the writings of Mrs. Mather, founder of Lighthouse, he established the 13th Lighthouse in the world in Osaka in 1935 (now Japan Lighthouse). After World War II, he worked hard to establish the Welfare Law for the Physically Disabled. He was friends with Helen Keller, and brought her to Japan in 1937 and 1948. He is a researcher of the blind author John Milton. His book is Light Out of Darkness.

社会事業家。大阪府出身。早稲田大学在学中に失明して中退，関西学院大学を経てエディンバラ大学で宗教哲学，純粋哲学を学ぶ。1931年初代大阪盲人協会会長となる。ライトハウス創設者のマザー夫人の著書に触発され，1935年世界で13番目のライトハウスを大阪に創設（現在の日本ライトハウス）。第２次世界大戦後は身体障害者福祉法制定に尽力。ヘレン・ケラーと親交があり，1937年，1948年と来日させた。盲目の作家ジョン・ミルトンの研究者。著書は《光は闇より》。
