1722‐98 A Bulgarian monk. Some say he died in 1773. In 1745 he became a monk at Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos in Greece, but in order to raise national consciousness among the Bulgarian people, who had been under Ottoman Turkish rule for nearly 400 years, he aimed to compile the forgotten history of his country, and devoted himself to collecting old historical materials and writing about it. His manuscript, History of the Slavic Bulgarians (written in 1762), was widely copied and became an ideological guide for the Bulgarian national revival in the 18th and 19th centuries.
