Hanjusanmaiin Temple

Japanese: 般舟三昧院 - はんじゅざんまいいん
Hanjusanmaiin Temple

This Tendai sect temple (a branch of Enryaku-ji Temple) is located in Hanshuin-mae-machi, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City. It is called Shigetsu-san and is abbreviated as Hanshuin. The principal image is Amida Nyorai. It is said that Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado (reigned 1464-1500) stayed there as a child and after ascending to the throne, he built a temple in Fushimi-den, where he received the bodhisattva precepts from the 13th head priest of Nison-in, Enjie-atsu Zenku, and made it a temple of imperial prayer. It is a training center for the study of the four sects of Tendai, Shingon, Ritsu, and Zen (or Jodo). In 1595 (4th year of Bunroku), Toyotomi Hideyoshi moved it from under Fushimi Castle to its current location. During the Edo period, Shuinji Temple had a land area of 150 koku. It served as the head priest of Nison-in Temple for many generations. It housed the memorial tablets of successive emperors, but in the Meiji period, these were moved to Sennyuji Temple. The wooden Amida Nyorai statue, the temple's main image, is said to have been made by Jikaku Daishi, and both the wooden seated statue of Acala are from the Heian period and are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. It also contains the graves of the mothers of Emperors Gokashiwabara, Gotsuchimikado, and Gonara.
