Indirect auscultation

Japanese: 《間接聴診法》 - かんせつちょうしんほう
Indirect auscultation

…He made a wooden tube and named it stéthoscope, combining the Greek words stēthos (chest) and skopos (to look). He then auscultated a large number of cases, recorded the sounds, and compared them with the findings of postmortem autopsies. In 1919, he published a paper entitled “On Indirect Auscultation, or, Chiefly, the Diagnosis of Diseases of the Lungs and Heart by this New Method” (abbreviated as “Indirect Auscultation”), establishing the basis of today’s auscultation method using a stethoscope. For the next century, until the discovery of X-rays, indirect auscultation, along with percussion, was the only method for examining the chest. …

From Laenek

...This was the beginning of auscultation, but later the stethoscope was made of wood and called the stéthoscope. This was a notable achievement that opened up new possibilities for physical diagnostic methods after the percussion method, and the results were published in 1843 under the title "De l'auscultation médiate" (Indirect Auscultation). The stethoscope was introduced to Japan in 1848 (Kaei 1).
